I'm not typically a numbers person. I have a bad memory for things like phone numbers, the birth and death years of composers or basic facts of kitchen math. How many tablespoons of butter make a cup? Sorry, I'm gonna have to Google that.*
Still, in the spirit of stretching myself to work in many different ways this month, I decided to play with numbers today. In honor of today's date (9/8/15), this piece is in 9/8 time and lasts 15 measures. And because it's the eighth, each of the piano's eighty-eight keys are played once and only once.
I needed a visual aid to keep track of my note usage:
Working this way required me to make sure I had my proverbial ducks in a proverbial row, hence today's title. This was fun, and I can see myself trying similarly-constrained pieces in the future. Who knows - maybe that'll help me get better at remembering Mozart's dates.**
